Hanalei…(12/22)

Untitled Namalokama (unreleased)
After leaving aFeinberg Gallery St. Regis-Princeville yesterday (12/22), I was headed down to Hanalei and the light was just spectacular. I’ve been after a certain shot (this is very close) and managed to pull over and capture a few images of the remarkable scene. Lucky we live Kaua’i!
Thanks!

La’a Kea O Pali

While spending a (wet) weekend on Oahu for an ultimate frisbee tournament in Waimanalo I of course had my camera in tow.  Heading back over the pali (cliffs) to townside (Honolulu) I noticed that the persistant rain had started to ease a bit.  Knownig there was a pretty cool overlook I decided to make a slight detour and check out the view from above.  Rain jacket on the spritzing wasnt too bad however the pali was still fairly socked in.  Then I noticed a trail down the edge of the cliff…remnants of the old highway.  So off I went.  Over the next hour or so the storm started to break and this beam of light came flying through the gap in the mountains.  First it illuminated the greenery in front of me.  Then later on, as the sky opened, the focus turned to Kaneohe below me.  I set up to capture this awesome view and was super thankful I made that decision to pull over.  Then again…we should make that decision more often 🙂

Abbey’s Country

Settling in to my Utah adventure I had still yet to have that light that photographer’s chase.  And knowing that desert country can be fickle with clouds I knew I would have to be patient.  On this particular day I started out by shooting sunrise here, at Arches, under mostly clear skies.  A few high cirrus but nothing to write home about.  As I met up with a local photog, we palled around for the day talking story and catching up (we had been in contact for a while).  After a midday break to kill some time (read: check out local brewpub), it was time to scout for sunset.  And looking up the sky had now filled with all sorts of high clouds.  A good sign.  But then again any clouds are better than nothing!

After driving around for over an hour, checking locations, thinking about light, hiking around, I made the decision for two spots.  I thought facing back to the east was a good decision as hopefully the setting sun would illuminate the La Sal Mountains and high clouds.  Then we’d try and hurry to another spot to capture Balanced Rock more intimately (that shot at another time).

As the sun dipped, and the last rays of light cast upon the rocky landscape, first exiting the arches and hoodoos, then up the mountainside in the background, then finally the clouds slowly gained color.  And of course this is where the little boy comes out and yips of glee start coming out.  I never get tired of seeing a great sunrise or sunset and to be able to capture this moment over such an amazing landscape was truly special.

Much thanks!

A Map And A Sunrise

This image was made on my first major photography trip in Aug ’12.  There are LOTS of images waiting for me to get to and this was a particularly nice morning.  I had wanted to get shots of reflections, of which I’m a huge fan, while in Yosemite.   This particular morning I had picked out a spot I saw on the map that I thought might lead to an interesting composition.  Getting down to the trail a bit later than I wanted (that never happens of course :p) the clouds were already looking amazingly promising.  And in August in California any clouds are a blessing!  I hurried a bit more and then as I was wondering if I picked the right area the trail bent around the corner and there was the river pointing right at the direction of half dome.  Perfect!  The clouds were already doing their thing and worked quickly on a number of compositions.  This one in particular requiring me to be thigh deep in the river.  The stillness in the morning was truly special.  The air felt cool, no rushing of cars in the valley floor, just the meandering river and myself.  Great way to start the day 🙂
