I Heart Shasta

I had my first trip to this part of California in August of 2012. It was quite the experience; solo on the road, first real big photo trip. Captured some awesome images and in doing so a few of my photos had that 'almost there' feel to them so I ventured back to try again. Being that it was now December I had the wild idea to hike...by myself...in the dark...to catch sunrise...from a place I had never been.
I remember hiking in the dark with my headlamp on and bundled up that I was a bit insane. Following footprints in the snow I was somehow able to make it to Heart Lake, a small lake above Castle Lake, before the sun rose. Needless to say that standing still in the snow was MUCH colder than hiking up to this location. As the light brightened I was able to find this composition with the wind buffed snow texture in the foreground and then the sky exploded with color. The glow on Mt. Shasta in the distance, the colors reflecting on Heart Lake below made my heart race...and suddenly I wasnt so cold (though my fingers might still disagree).
