Planning to be at a certain place around specific conditions is always a roll of the dice. While we can make predictions about what might happen, the chances of them all aligning can be quite slim. On this particular evening the very low tide happened to overlap with a lack of large waves, which in the winter can be a rarity. The glassy water made for the perfect reflection as the sun popped out below the clouds, briefly illuminating the undulating sand in the foreground before retiring for the evening. Hiking back late in the day always offers some sort of show and this day did not disappoint. The cloudy day didn't give us too much hope but that brief window on the horizon lead to a spectacular display of light. Lucky again that the wind was down so that I could capture the backlit Ti leaves glowing in the foreground as the waves pounded the shoreline.

Sometimes things seem too good to be true. A magnificent scene, I had timed sunset for low tide to capture reflections of the Na Pali from Ke'e Beach, however I failed to account for the full moon rise. In this case the luck favors the prepared. Moon rising to the east and sunset to the west. A truly unique capture of Ke'e!

Was lucky enough to have a friend working with the endangered species conservation teams and brought me to this beauty deep within the Koke'e forest. This particular sunset was spent with my future fiancée enjoying yet another magical day at Makua (Tunnels) Beach. As the sun was getting close to the horizon I decided to wade out in to the water holding my camera just above the water surface to take advantage of the really fun textures and play of light. And of course the perfect beam of light extending over Mt. Makana to top it all off!

Back in March of 2022 I had the chance to spend some time over on Oahu. And while I have been over there plenty over the years this day was more about cruising around and just seeing what there was. I know I've driven by without my camera before and seen these crazy turquoise waters so when they were POPPING I eagerly parked and got to work figuring out how to capture the scene. To me this just is the perfect encapsulation of wanting to put your feet in the sand. And that water color...wow!

Even though I lived in the Salt Lake City area for 3ish years from 2004-2007, I never adventured much until years later. Ski bum life and having just picked up a camera made it more about the snow than checking out new landscapes. In the spring of 2016 I had the opportunity to head out to western Utah and the Bonneville salt flats. A surreal and incredible place.
At twilight the first evening the soft glow was accentuating the salt cracks and the resulting image made me think of all the synapses of our mind...off in to the distance and seemingly infinity.

Winter and spring seasons bring big waves to the north shore of the Hawai'i Islands. Because of this the beaches are constantly and dramatically changing from season to season and year to year. This particular beach, Kauapea (Secrets) Beach is no exception. My goal this day was to capture some abstracts but the explosions off the rocks further down the beach caught my attention. With the midday sun streaming over the cliffside in the background the light and texture along with the ephemeral glowing green rocks made for a really dramatic scene. Giving that feeling of the Hawai'i of old.

From a very special day with friends up in Koke'e, Jan 2021. The oceans series continues to explore the unique combination of light and water and this is no exception. From 4,000 feet up the clouds and horizon blended together as the sunset light reflected on to the ocean below. A large swell was also approaching and the energy could be clearly seen moving toward us from above adding to the texture in this particular image.

The Na Pali coast is a place like no other. This particular photo was taken as the morning light streamed over the imposing cliffs creating this incredible emerald green water in front of Kalalau and the Cathedrals. The light reflecting off the rocks add to the dappled colors in the ocean with the towering 4,000 ft mountain behind. A horizontal companion piece to "Emerald City". Epic morning!

Not many things are as iconic as Mt. Makana overlooking the north shore of Kaua'i. As the sun was setting on this summer day I found this gap in a couple of trees that perfectly framed the peak in the distance. A long exposure was used to smooth out the water and create a serene scene. A perfect end to the day.

Lots to get distracted from in Hawai'i (like the 20 or so turtles just off to my left), but taking a moment to breath and relax can lead to some pretty special images.

A shot a long time coming. Always was a missing photograph in my portfolio and this past summer I timed this capture to Lahaina Noon. A phenomenon that happens when the sun is directly overhead. Resulting in vertical objects having no shadow, or in this case the shadow being directly below the pier. Thus creating compelling lines. Having tried the shot earlier in the year the clouds over the mountains were a bit too much so on my second attempt was lucky to see that there was much more sun involved. For a little extra experiment I chose a 15 minute exposure which had a beautiful effect on the clouds and water. Glad it took me all these years to finally capture the under side of the Hanalei Pier!

Given the time of year we were treated to an excellent sunset as the sun touched the end of Ke'e Beach in the distance and the monk seals napped under the iconic Mt. Makana (Bali Hai). A very special moment.

Cruising down the Na Pali Coast during the summer of 2020 we had a lovely pod of dolphins escorting us. As they normally play with the boats the early morning light dancing on the calm ocean lead to a fun visual as these 3 led the pack. A pleasant surprise was the 3 perfect sunstars reflecting off the surface. Great way to start the day!

The circumstances around this image revolve around a personally tough day. I received a phone call from a best friend that I should grab my camera and get my ass out the door as the clouds were being wild from a spring storm. Begrudgingly I said he was right and quickly grabbed my bag and headed up the road to the base of Makaleha to a spot I've been to a number of times. Of course he was right and was absolutely blown away. The only problem is that by the time I had gotten up there my window had closed. Shortly after capturing this image the clouds came back over the mountain and the light was gone!

Unique situations can lead to unique images. On this particular day I was leaving the north shore and a massive thunderstorm happened to be passing over the island. In fact it was raining so hard that I needed to pull over to the side of the highway as it was just impossible to drive. As it started to clear I headed east and first stopped around Kealia to photography Kalalea. The idea then occurred to me to try and photograph one of the 'wettest spots on earth'. Luckily at the time I knew of a person with a lanai that overlooked the mountains. After a quick phone call I was able to make it over there and the conditions were truly mind-blowing. So much in fact...that I forgot to change the settings on my camera, and this image was captured unfortunately much smaller than normal. This is reflected in the max size being 24" x 36" however the true majesty of the mountain was on display that day! Lessons were learned and excited to share this image with you all.

Hanakapi'ai Falls is one of the most popular hiking trails in the entire Hawaiian chain and for good reason. A 4.5 miles approach leads you to this 300' waterfall tucked in the back of the valley. While I've been there a number of times I'm always looking for new and unique ways to showcase that which we get to see. Check out Tranquility for another special perspective. Coming away with images like these always makes the beer at the end of the trail taste better.

During the covid shutdowns of 2020 the beaches on Kaua'i were mostly left to their own devices. This meant wind-swept stretches where this scene was found. This rock was probably only about 3" long but created these interesting patterns in the sand, as if we could observe wind as a fluid.

While my image Milky Way Serenade has become iconic with Hanalei, I've always wondered if there was a way to capture something of the very picturesque Waimea Pier as well. While doing some research I had narrowed down a window of time and then had to wait and see when I was able to get over there to capture...and the weather to cooperate. Luck was with me this evening as the last little bits of twilight added some color to the mostly black sky. The Milky Way blasting out of the Pacific. Always a rush when it works out as planned!

While I lived in Princeville for many years there are still nooks and crannies that get overlooked. This particular day I was spending time at a beach that I had only visited a couple of times. Just so happened as we were hiking out the ehukai (sea spray) was hanging in the canopy and creating these awesome beams. I took a handful of compositions before the angle of the light changed and the beams faded away. The 'walking' trees seen here are Hala trees which were used heavily by the Hawaiian people.

Taken the same day as Fire In The Sky, these special conditions were such a pleasure to capture. After waiting for just the right conditions, the light treated me to an incredible show as the ehukai (sea spray) was illuminated by the setting sun against the rugged cliffs. Then the hike out in the dark under headlamp and celebratory beer afterwards!

Spending any time around Makua Beach, also known as Tunnels, one is sure to instantly fall in love. The towering peak of Makana in the distance and beautiful sand wrapping around the coast. When the conditions are just right, the clarity of the water is surreal and this just happened to be one of those mornings. With the drone up in the air, one can see the channels which both serve to give this beach its (english) name and why often the current is so good at moving snorkelers down the coast. What a special morning indeed!

Waves on the north shore of Kaua'i are nothing new but, since I am a land based mammal, getting those perfect barrel shots is a bit more tricky. This particular day, I was chasing the swell and the late afternoon sun was perfectly backlighting the waves, briefly reveling the deep emerald color that is often seen in this part of the world. The only trick...pushing the button at just the right moment.

The cliff at Keoniloa Bay (also known as Shipwrecks) is an iconic rock outcropping that elicits memories for anyone who has spent time there. The idea for this photograph came into my mind as the cliff faces toward the west and I hoped it would catch the fading light as the foreground was just in shadow. The rest was up to mother nature and the tides! Luck was with me this day and happy to come away with this special image.

The story of this image actually starts in 2008 or so. While visiting a restaurant on the south side I was headed to the restroom and saw a photo of this location and was quite intrigued. With a bit of research I was able to figure out where this magical place was. And....not easy to access. I knew it would be an epic adventure, but did not think it would take me until 2020 to capture. Timing the location with the setting sun was always the goal and it was mostly definitely worth the wait. And the hike back in the dark with headlamps and a few amazing people is something I will never forget.

Many years ago while camping with friends out at Polihale State Park I had the chance to photograph the Milky Way arching over the cliffs late one night. Definitely by chance, the photo (Spirits In The Sky), has been in the back of my mind ever since. While my technique has become more refined over the years so has my ability to figure out potential situations. For this image to be possible clouds, moon, time of year all need to align. What I wasnt planning on this particular night (after many attempts over a few year period), was the amount of camper's present in the park. While at first dejected it turns out the added element of the camp fire and lights scattered on the beach give a sense of scale and reality to this surreal looking image!

While admittedly a land-based mammal, a number of years ago I decided to experiement with some in-water photographs and rented a water housing for my camera. The week was fun and while there was a huge learning curve it still resulted in a handful of exciting images. This particular day, I went down to Lumahai Beach, which in the winter can be amazingly dangerous, and had a laughable time laying in the 1-2' waves lapping up on the beach. I'm sure a comical thing to watch but was excited to get my own mini-tube.

About 12 years ago I produced my first truly successful nightscape in Milky Way Serenade. In that time I have been re-imagining ways of showcasing this iconic location. With some new technology (a lot has changed in those years) I finally had the conditions to attempt this photograph in 2019. While my first attempt came up short, this night would prove to be the one. Blazing Milky Way above Hanalei Bay...the (few) town lights illuminating the back left of the image. A few lucky homes lit up along the Bay. Truly a remarkable experience and quite pleased with the result on this one...as I hope you are too!

After camping the night before chasing an image at Polihale (still unsuccessful as of fall 2019), I was returning back to the south shore when I noticed a large storm cloud off in the distance. As I made my way back to the Poipu area the idea to check out Spouting Horn popped in to my mind and I raced over. The early morning light combined with the dramatic (and very rare) storm cloud in the distance made a truly unique combination. I worked quickly to capture a number of images before the clouds blocked the light and the moment was gone. Turning around I was the only one around to witness this magic...the crowds arriving later in the day to this popular spot.

Trying to capture a place that is popular and in thousands (if not millions) of photographs always presents challenges. I had given myself the task of capturing Keoniloa Bay (also known as Shipwreck's Beach), with the bright blue and turquoise colors that sparkle under the midday light. A time that most photographers (including myself), tend to avoid. Heading to the west side of the beach I used a long exposure to smooth out time. The crashing of the waves, the children playing, the chatter of conversation; all 77 seconds reduced to this one image.

The winter of 2018 was one for the books on Kaua'i. The rains turned on early February and didnt seem to stop until late summer. One of the things this gave me was the opportunity to catch some dramatic conditions as the storms came and went, creating this surreal scene as the waterfall on the face of Namolokama pours thousands of feet down, in and out of the clouds.

Taken the same day as The Kraken, this late season swell created some dramatic wave watching. The late afternoon light casting a soft glow on this massive wave gave it a painterly look and seems much calmer than the moment actually was!

While definitely an incredible experience what I didnt realize was how much the whales underwater would seem to 'glow'. This image brings that feeling of these massive creatures just below the surface while distorting their true size!

Since adding the drone to the photography quiver the idea of capturing unique perspective on waves has been quite entertaining. During the winter of '17-'18 I had just that opportunity. During a large NW swell I ventured down to Lumahai just past Hanalei Bay and launched my drone. The idea and actuality of capturing the shot was quite tricky as waves move very quickly and do not break in the same place every time! With the monster 20'+ waves crashing in I was able to time this one perfectly as it broke. The dappled light from sun coming through the tall pine trees on the cliffside above.

Large waves on the North shore of Kaua'i are nothing new. What was special this particular day was that the timing of the late season swell (spring) offered unique late afternoon light. As I headed out to explore the Princeville coastline, I got to the bottom of the trail and the surf was huge. So large in fact, I decided to stay where I was and watch from there. As I quickly pulled out my gear a massive set came in and I was able to rattle off a few shots. This was the 3rd shot of the day and the best one!

Because I couldn't decide which I liked better I chose to release both!

Having the opportunity to visit this incredible viewpoint deep within Koke'e State Park up in Waimea Canyon never disappoints. Since the first time I was shown this place, it has been an island favorite. On this particular evening, while the clouds were absent for any crazy sunset light, the twilight glow was spectacular and the camera was able to pick up the subtle blues and purples that were really accentuating the peaceful experience that was this magnificent place.

The blue/purple hues that can be seen is actually the shadow of the earth being projected on the sky. The high cirrus clouds above still holding sunset colors. Amazing!

For anyone that's ever been to the North Shore of Kaua'i, there's a spot. If you're the one driving most likely it's a head snap to the left, if you're the passenger maybe you reach for the phone to take a photo or video. You would have just driven through Anahola, up the hill from Moloa'a, past Waipake. You notice that the peaks are getting closer to the road. After a stretch of trees and brush that block the view it opens up and there it is. Rolling hills, the mountains seemingly just out of reach...paradise?
In the 10 years I've driven by this spot there have only been 2 opportunities that have arisen where I have photographed this location. I had always imagined this as a sunrise image. Though the first (still unreleased) is in late afternoon light, this photograph was taken just this past January while leading a 5 day workshop. I had one of those all-too-familiar moments of pulling the car over and turning around. The light was too good and this needed to be captured. To this day, and I can imagine forever, I wont stop checking out this view every time I pass.

Hawaii is known for its surreal color palette. The trick is once you see the color to try and capture it. This particular afternoon was during a 5 day Kaua'i workshop I was leading. While the weather was decidedly unexciting for sunset, as I sat on the rocks and watched the waves splash up I noticed occasionally there would be the translucent blue color appear briefly. My ah-ha moment. With my telephoto lens I wanted to isolate this ephemerally beautiful phenomenon and spent the next 30-45 min transfixed. All in all, I was able to come away with about 5+ images I felt captured the feeling of that moment.

Large surf on the Kaua'i, no matter how long one lives here, is always an event. On this particularly large swell (30-40') the waves were too large to get close so we decided to go to a spot on the cliffs in Princeville. As the waves exploded along the rocks the surf would create these momentary captivating patterns. I took out my telephoto lens and spent a while waiting for the waves to hit just right. In the end this shot conveyed that sense of watching this powerful force in person.

The plan was to meet up with a friend and get some shots but as she was running late I was by myself as the sun descended. I've always been drawn to the way the sun dances off the water at low angles. This is one of my favorite locations on Kauai and had not been here in well over a year. With some free time I was debating between 2 locations for sunset and ended here. While hiking down the trail I was thinking with the clear skies it would be fun to try a technique I've been meaning to give a whirl...combing one exposure for the landscape while being able to see the stars. Taking out my fancy phone and using Star Walk I was able to find that the Milky Way would be in this approximate position just after sunset. So composed, set my exposure and waiting for the light to drop low enough to get the first shot...then wait...and wait. Finally got dark enough to get a shot of the stars but the Milky Way wasn't far enough over! Rats. Spent the next 90 min or so waiting for the 'cloud' to move across the sky in to my composition. While taking the exposure I thought it might be fun to immediately tilt up and take another to possible blend in to make a panorama. The Milky Way was arching over the entire sky but alas couldn't get it all :P

Shot on Day 1 of the video documentary for aFeinberg Galleries. After picking up BROVADO Weddings (Media) we drove up Waimea Canyon to the Kalalau Overlook and descended Kalepa Ridge...an epic hike that takes you to a spit of land that divides Kalalau and Honopu. Needless to say, it offers incredible views. This was shot just before sunset as the sun was preparing to pop out below the cloud line so it wasnt direct light but instead this bright filtered super sexy light. I isolated the ridges on the north side of the valley as they seemed to jump right out at me. Trees at the bottom of the image help impart scale. A magnificent sight! This location had been on my to-do list for quite some timeâ¦as in years. I had been down here prior to scout but fate would have me come back a different morning. After I overslept my alarm by almost an hour my initial planned shot had to be scratched. I quickly searched for backup locations closer to my house and remembered this spot. The road down here is less than forgiving and was lucky to be able to get my 2-wheel drive vehicle out in the end. Add to that the danger of this spot with the waves washing over the lava rock and wind blowing in your face. But when images like this are the result it's hard to complain!

It's always good to have spots in one's mind that we can run to close by for sunrise and sunsets. I am extraordinarily lucky that this is that close to my house. Some friends asked me to head down here for sunset about 20 min before the sun was to depart so hurrying to the trail and mostly running/sliding down it, got down to the bottom and was greeted by this scene.

This was from a very productive afternoon at Secret's Beach. There is so much to play with there during the late spring as the beach is coming back but still enough rocks to make seascapes very interesting. Just as the sun was creeping behind the clouds. I was able to capture this awesome scene. I wish someone was watching the whole event unfold because it involved me running back and forth to my bag (which almost got hit by a wave) and then literally running to get the light and just shoving my tripod in to the sand in the approximate position to get the light before it left. There was a pool that was draining behind me so there was a good current passing under me and oh yea...see that wave coming in...gets the heart racing!

Normally when one walks up to a 300ft waterfall the idea is to capture the entire grandeur of the scene. However upon approaching the base of the falls the softness and subtly caught me. The way the veil of water was playing with the dark rocks.. I knew the contrast would work then the next step would be to find an angle that worked best. This one seemed to balance the soft greens in the corner well with the color of the water. A truly tranquil scene.

I'm really not sure where to start with this image. This is the end. The end of a 3 day expedition to the bottom of Waimea Canyon on Kauai's west side. Mark Twain called Waimea Canyon the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. I've never been to the Grand Canyon but have seen photos (yea that sounded lame) and I'll take the color of Waimea any day :P
The hike out of the canyon is intense. Almost 3000 vertical feet in about 3 miles. Sections of the trail are nearing 30 degrees. This normally would just be just hard work...now add rain. Lots of rain.
After getting to the top of one of the longest steep sections of the trail the rain broke. We stopped to have a drink and snack and then it happened. Clouds started lifting. If this was the only image I got in the 3 day trip I would have been stoked (luckily there are a LOT more). The fresh rain caused the colors to become super saturated and the clouds a mystical feel to the scene.
Watching the clouds move over the ridge to our right the rest of the hike, approx 1.5mi, was done in the heaviest rain I've ever hiked in.

Kalalau is an almost mythical place. Only accessible by hiking 11 miles or kayaking 6 miles it offers a truly unique experience for the mind, body and soul. While setting up camp on the first night I was alerted to the rising moon and went out to see what was out there. To photograph the entire scene I stitched 11 images together to get this 180 degree view. The moon rising was the icing on the cake!

While hiking along the Kalalau Trail on Kauai's Na Pali coast we were taking a break as I was photographing the valley that was around the corner. Looking up I noticed the clouds streaming over the peak above us. To give a sense of the towering nature of the mountain I chose to use a long exposure to blur the motion of the clouds. Took about 4 or so just trying to get different cloud motions/patterns and think this one worked out the best.

Having known about this location for quite a while I was excited to make the journey down here as my first stop of my Aug '12 California trip. And it did not disappoint...a truly unbelievable display of falling water.
For this composition, I wanted to isolate the drips of water over the moss as it hit the river bed. Knowing I was going to shoot a panorama here, gave me the foresight to already imagine this photo in my mind. Capturing it was all that was left :)

High alpine jungle? Nope, right smack dab in the middle of a residential area in Wailua, Kauai.
After a crazy storm, 4" of rain in one hour, the river below this little valley was raging (to say the least). The weather and amount of water was causing this mist to form and float up and around this tree. Albizia's, while invasive, do offer good subject matter and after starring at this one for a while, I found my shot. Ended up going all the way down the lanai to get a clean perspective and waiting for the mist to come swirling back. Then rattle off about 12 shots trying to get the correct amount of fog.

After a "failed" attempt at another shot earlier in the morning, I decided to stop by the Hanalei Valley overlook to see how the morning light was. Of course, I was on top of my car for a better angle when a fellow photog showed up asking if I'd seen the rainbow. Having been there for 15 min or so and not seeing one I kinda shrugged my shoulders...then not 5 min later this shower passed into the valley and BLAM!
I had classical music blaring from the radio, the two of us witnessing Kauai's awesomeness and luckily to be there with my camera :)

Stormy weather is always the best time to go out and shoot. The clouds are usually very unique and light can become special. This was a looooong (~5min) exposure in between heavy rains during a spring storm on Kauai. We don't get real storms often but they are sure fun when they come on in. I really wanted to draw out the mood of the evening as it got dark. The lights of the houses start to glow at the shoreline for added affect.

Hiking in to Waimea Canyon offers an incredible array of options and photographic opportunities. Few people make the 3k vertical foot decent into the valley floor. And with good reason. The trail is not for the weak hearted as the drop is made in only 3 miles. With varying weather from very hot and dusty to flooding rain the trek can take on many different challenges.
Making our way up to our destination, Lonomea Canyon, a the trail split and elevated slightly our guide, Scott (http://kauaihikingadventures.c...) and his client stopped to take in the view and thought there might be a shot there for me (they were VERY accommodating). As we sat watching the scene in front of us, the scope is hard to comprehend. The light however wasnt right at all. I turned to Scott and said...you know what would be perfect...if the light came through and just illuminated all the ridges to give some pop and depth to the scene. Not 5 min later it happened...the spotlight started high on the ridge in the back and started to drop. Then another beam. Before I knew it the trees on the hill were perfectly backlit. Talk about ask and receive! The tall green spires you see are the Agave's sprouting new growth and are about 20ft tall.
All in all, patience and a bit of luck wins again :)

Getting up for sunrise always has its risks of getting skunked. At least at sunset one can tell what the clouds are doing. Getting up at 445...it's dark. Getting down to our location we were relieved to see it was relatively clear out to the east. Timing this for the solstice means a small window to capture an image with the sun in this position. As the sun came up the color exploded. After clicking like crazy for about 15 min I wanted to do a panorama. This image was INCREDIBLY difficult to pull off, but in the end the efforts were rewarded. What a great way to start the summer season!

On day 2 of the film shoot for the documentary for aFeinberg Galleries, we hit the trail early and hiked along the south shore of Kauai for sunrise at a spot I had scouted the week earlier. The hope was to get some sweet reflections but alas the wind was not to have any of that. Instead, I scampered out to capture the waves as they washed over this neon green moss. Luck would have it, the sun would rise just at the edge of the cliffs and grace us with about 5 min of good light and then back in to the clouds. So glad the (film) cameras were rolling to capture this special moment!

On my way south, after spending time up near Acadia and for my sister's wedding, I wanted to stop at Old Orchard Beach to check out this cool pier I saw a photo of. In true Maine fashion it was crazy foggy and drizzly. Perfect :) We don't have ground fog in Hawaii (too warm), so it was a great change of pace. After shooting from the side of the pier I ventured under for what I knew was my goal for the afternoon. Took some experimenting before I slapped on the 10 stop and found my spot...some lucky guessing to frame the comp as it was impossible to see through the filter and I couldnt stay there long as the mist would have made it difficult. Run, plop down, shoot for 3 min, brace against the waves washing up and get freaked out as they came down the pier, back up and clean the filter, go again. Did this about 3 or 4 times and hoped I got an exposure that I was happy with. Luckily there was one. :)

"The Death Valley trip was an exciting one for me. A place I have seen so much of, but had yet to actually experience with my own eyes (and lens). Having 4 full days allowed me to casually plan out places to capture depending on conditions. This flexibility meant leaving the Racetrack til last. The main reason being that I happened to visit during the coldest stretch of the season. Camping below freezing every night with daytime highs barely out of the 40s (til the last day). My thought process meant it would gradually warm up toward the end of the week and the Racetrack is at 3700ft, which means colder.
Arriving at the Racetrack is no easy feat. 26 miles of washboard road. 4wd and high clearance recommended. After rattling my way for an hour, the playa (dried ancient lake bed) appears as a white dish amongst the encompassing mountains. My heart beats a little faster and my right foot gets heavier. As I pull up to the parking area and hop out, the sun is warm but there is already a chill in the air. It's late afternoon and the best evening light is yet to come but it's about a mile from the car to the best rocks.
These rocks, the reason I made this bone-jarring drive, move. On their own. And no one's ever seen it. As they do, they leave patterns in the playa. It's speculated that a mix of wet playa and STRONG winds create this unique phenomenon (some rocks are upwards of 100lbs). So off I go, camera bag packed, extra clothes a must. Gloves, hats, long underwear.... As I trek across this overwhelming, unique landscape, I start to encounter the rocks. Different shapes, sizes, patterns.
I have a couple of shots in the back of my mind to try and capture, so finding the right rocks and patterns is essential. The first pair of rocks that catch my eye has me put a note in my head...ok...this is the shot.
And I continue.
Not 10 minutes later, as I explore further, I come across the rocks you see here. Ah ha! Not the first one...THIS was my shot. Ok. Note. Off I go to keep shooting.
The sun setting lower, about to disappear below the mountains for the evening. A group of 3 who was out in the corner packs up as the sun goes and they're gone in to the twilight.
I'm alone. Very very alone. It's quiet. More quiet than one could possibly imagine. So quiet in fact that my ears are ringing. I find this quite confusing with my only explanation being that with modern life we have so much entering our ears constantly that the absence of which creates its own noise. Pretty amazing.
I head back to the pair of rocks as the light is almost faded and the moonlight is taking over. Just a quarter moon but at a location like this, its bright enough to see without using my headlamp. As I set up the shot, I realize that the photograph would be much more powerful if the moon was a bit lower and casting a better shadow on the rocks.
Well, the decision was made. I set up the camera and tripod, took the battery out and kept it in my pocket (batteries hate cold weather) and went back to the car for dinner. Let the moon set a bit and then attempt the shot. Funny thing about leaving a black camera and tripod in the middle of a place like the Racetrack. Not so easy to find! Luckily my way points combined with my phone made the process not as scary as it could have been.
However, by the time I left the car the temperature was already in the upper 20's. 2 pairs of socks. 2 layers on the legs. 4 layers on the body. 2 hoods and a winter hat plus my gloves. Yes. I looked quite hilarious.
Now for the photograph. A 1-hour (yes, 60min) exposure of the sky. Calculating my settings and clicking the shutter I knew the only thing left was to wait.
And wait.
And wait.
I walked laps around the playa. Laid on my back and watched the stars (shooting and still). Played some card games. And finally....that comforting click.
I could pack up and finally warm up back at the car. With the current technology my camera processes the photograph for another hour, so I set my alarm to remind me, headed to warmth and waited. As soon as the beep went off I dove across the car to the trunk to pull out the camera and peep at the back.
Even with the moon out I nailed the exposure. This huge sigh of relief goes through the body that all that time and effort (and cold!) was not for waste. Of course, when the car read 14F the next morning I knew the sunrise shots were going to be just as cold..."

Photographing sunrise from a popular location in Death Valley my attention was pulled elswhere as the sun started to crest the hillside to the east. The intersection of land took on the appearance of gears as the light was reflected creating a surreal scene.
